How to imagine a junction point between Europe's different languages? How to establish sustainable connections between writers, translators and publishers? What structure could help mediate and translate literary works and contribute to the creation of a common European culture? These are the questions that since 2008 have lead a growing group of writers, intellectuals and researchers to come together as the "Society of European Authors."

Today, the Society of European Authors (SeA) is supported by numerous mentors: Peter Sloterdijk, Bruno Latour, Hélène Cixous, Georges Hoffman, Barbara Cassin, Gisèle Sapiro, Olivier Mannoni, Pascale Casanova, André Schiffrin, and many others are associated with the SeA projects. It relies also on a network of mediators, who contribute concretely to the circulation of texts in the different languages of the Union: editors, readers and translators, in France, Italy, Russia, Germany and Spain... 

The SeA functions as a platform, as a network of projects

Complementing national systems of funding (stipends, translation aids) and contrary ot the logic of book fairs and markets, which often value the number of copies sold over the quality of the work, the SeA wants to promote the idea of multilingual "cross-translation."

At a time when budget cuts are being announced in France, Germany and elsewhere, the Society will defend, together with other institutions (CEATL, ATLF…) the idea of a "European fund for translation" (See Campaigns). Supported by its network of writers, translators and mentors, it will establish each year a list of deficiencies in European translation. 

Finally, with the help of all of its contributors, by their action, with the idea of a culture beyond the different languages and borders (patrons, public institutions, cultural centers), the SeA will inform of the current intellectual and literary events and will try to keep track of the resources (residencies, NGOs, fellowships) available to authors and translators.
